Hold GE15 instead of series of state polls, Shafie says

PUTRAJAYA should call for a general election instead of dissolving one state assembly after another for snap polls, said Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The Warisan president said continuous state elections are a waste of resources.

“I hope a general election can be called rather than spend money on one state (elections) and another state, and another state,” said the former Sabah chief minister as quoted by Malaysiakini.

“After the (state) elections, there will be a parliamentary election in that state as well.”

Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar yesterday gave his royal assent to dissolve the state assembly, paving way for snap polls.

It will be the fourth state elections held during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the third snap polls in the same period.

The other state elections were held in Malacca, Sabah and Sarawak.

Malacca and Sabah called for snap polls following defections of assemblymen, while the Sarawak assembly was dissolved after its term expired.

Shafie said a general election will also make things easier for voters, besides saving cost.

On the upcoming Johor polls, the Semporna MP said Warisan may contest.

He said he will talk to Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to discuss.

“We must prepare if we are to contest.”

Shafie confirmed Warisan’s alliance with Muda at the former’s peninsula chapter launch last month. – January 23, 2022.
