DR Mahathir Mohamad should have looked after the welfare of Malaysian Indians better while he was prime minister, said MIC president Dr S. Subramaniam today, following the Pakatan Harapan leader’s pledge to uplift the community if the opposition wins the 14th general election.

“Well, we would have been very happy if he had done that in the 22 years he was prime minister. The Indian community would be in a much better position than where it is now.”

He was commenting on Dr Mahathir’s speech at a Ponggal celebration in Kapar yesterday, where Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister said he would uphold the rights of the Indian community if PH won GE14.

“I pledge to you, should I once again become PM, I will take good care of the people in the country. Surely, I will pay attention to the needs of the Indian community.”

The PH chairman has been nominated as the coalition’s prime minister candidate.

Dr Subramaniam said the pledge was too late.

“It’s too late. He had the opportunity, and he didn’t do it,” said the Segamat MP and health minister at a press conference after a Cancer and Health Awareness Week programme in Kuala Lumpur. – February 5, 2018.

  • So, Langkawi was developed not because of TDM but BN/ Umno. Indians did not progress not because of BN/UMNO but because of TDM. Heads I win, tails you lose

    • With due respect, I DISagree! UMNO (whoever the leaders were/are) treated the minorities shabbily. Please remember they took away Penang's free port status. They were jealous that the port was doing lucrative trades with Sumatra and Southern Thailand making the residents, mostly minorities and mamaks very prosperous.

  • What was Samy Vellu contribution in his 31 years as the 7th President of MIC? If Samy Vellu's efforts were often washed out or belittled during the 22 years of Dr M's leadership, does that not mean that change would be inevitable if Dr M drive the change instead?
MIC was with BN then and still with BN now. Dr M is just saying he will 'do more if placed in office again'. He never promised like the Indian blueprint BN is promising. Then again, we have had many blueprints before.

    Good luck with that.

  • In the past - the former President of MIC (Tun Samy Vellu) - claimed that Tun Mahatir is a God and the best Prime Minister of Malaysia - who had provided the most assistance to our Indian Community. Our Indian Community will never progress if Indian Leader like you - keep kissing Prime Minister's toes. Today - Indian are dominating the following business - beli besi buruk, cendol store, rojak store, snow car-wash, newspaper stand, babrber shop, lorry driver and not to forget - samseng

  • UNMO leaders (past and present) are racists. Promises made to the minorities just before general elections are never kept and forgotten after. Najib renegaded on promises make to Hindraf while Tun MM renegaded on promises made to Suqiu!
