Dr Mahathir can’t operate like he did before, says Muhyiddin

DR Mahathir Mohamad will not be the same type of prime minister that he was the last time he held office, said Pakatan Harapan deputy chairman Muhyiddin Yassin.

The former deputy prime minister said under PH, the decisions of the prime minister will be guided by a presidential council made up of leaders from  DAP, PKR, Pribumi and Amanah.

“Although Tun (Mahathir) has been endorsed by the four parties unanimously, we believe he will act in accordance with what the coalition wants.

“He will be guided by the policy spelt out by the PH presidential council. The position is not the same as the prime minister in Barisan Nasional, where he held the position for 22 years when he was still in BN,” he told reporters in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, today.

Critics have often accused the former prime minister of being dictatorial during his time in office, and PH’s move name him prime minister-designate has created some unhappiness among the coalition’s ranks.

Muhiyiddin said a PH prime minister has the responsibility to ensure PH manifesto pledges are delivered, and that the post cannot be held for more than two terms.

“On matters like policy, before it is brought to the cabinet, it will be presented to the PH supreme council first.

“Dr Mahathir will be expressing his views, other PH leaders will also share their views, too. Rest assured that his duty as prime minister is also guided by the things he had promised to the people.”

He said those who had a grudge against Dr Mahathir should re-think their position, saying the fight in PH was to save the nation.

Sabahans blame Dr Mahathir for a laundry list of issues, such as his alleged involvement in flooding the state with illegal immigrants and providing them citizenship through the so-called “Projek IC”.

“But you can imagine, if people like DAP’s Lim Kit Siang, Anwar Ibrahim and others could come together with Dr Mahathir, there is a higher reason for this. It is to save the country.

“You want to forget the problems of the past and bring about normalcy, and give much needed support to make a better Malaysia through PH, ” he said. – January 24, 2018.

  • Mahatir, Muhyddin or Anwar - all are recycled umno politicians. We need fresh & untainted politician untainted. Expired & washed-out politician is unlikely to contribute positively. We know because a former, failed agency manager from AIA appointed to lead our company's agency force. Old outdated idea, bankrupt of strategy, unable to grasp new technology, poor Chinglish communication skill - within 4 years - the insurer sank to the bottom of the jamban. • We need to defeat UMNO controlled BN. That is given. Anwar is the chosen leader but he is in jail. If a younger person is put in place as PM, who can guarantee that he would vacate the post when Anwar is available to serve. The choice of a PM warning the chair, or burning it, until Anwar can sit in it is Lim Kit Siang, and Mahathir. The Malaysian constitution is silence on the race/religion of the person who can be PM, and so Lim Kit Siang is as qualified as Mahathir, even if he shows the long line of his family tree upwards from his grandfather, to be PM. PH worries that Malays would not vote for PH if Lim Kit Siang is mentioned as a PM candidate. Conversely, Mahathir seems to be able to draw some Malays' votes even in FELDA schemes. So Mahathir is named the PM candidate for PH, and some non-Malays are certainly unhappy for making him PM. Which non-Malay would spare him the blame, (his cronies perhaps) when he had the opportunity and responsibility to end NEP in 1990 but he did not? It was his responsibility to have objectively assessed the actual achievements among Malays whether they had owned 30% equity share capital in the corporate sector, a target set by Tun Razak for Malays. Government funds such as those utilized to invest in GLCs could be designated to top up to the 30% and hold in trust for them, where needed. Mahathir can do just that when he takes up the PM post, under PH. Muhyiddin said the PH Council will guide Mahathir on his administration, and Muhyiddin, if he had changed his Malay first thinking, should for once be sincere to appreciate what harm NEP has caused the nation, and get the PH council to act accordingly.

Mahathir blames Najib for perpetrating many wrongs to the nation. But Najib has only done what UMNO government performed in the past, maybe with improvement to perfection. It is most probable that Mahathir has used up all his tricks to set up UMNO culture in government. So Mahahtir could not have more tricks up his sleeve. Non-Malays have experienced the worst when Mahathir was at his best to deliver the discriminatory policies; it is believed that he can't do much worse, even if left unattended. Unlike MCA and MIC, PH component parties together could produce a dozen persons who are capable of assuming the position as PM, given the chance. They should be able to show Mahathir the right path to guide the nation forward. Taking Mahahtir into PH is like taking medicine. Medicines are poison, but needed. Even if we assume that Najib has done no wrong, it is still time to defeat BN, so that the country can have a choice, and BN should not have the monopoly for six decades and continued forever. It would be odd if we are forced to accept BN knowing about their frauds, but not willing to accept a calculated risk to improve our destiny. Notice always that Mahathir as pm is temporary but dozens others are waiting to do good for the nation.

  • It is a question of hope to have a better Government or persist with the current one. A 91 year old does not need a Hermes bag anymore, that I am sure and a 91 year old need not party on a mega yacht or NY. If the current one persist, be ready for increase in GST, more taxes and more miserable life for the rakyat as he doesn't keep to his last election's promises on so many times to make life easier for the rakyat. Instead, more and more big "scandals" floating up. Their rich cronies and kakis are not affected by all these but the rakyat have to end up carrying the burden. On top of that, we have to keep hearing stupid remarks from "stupid" ministers every now and then. So, why not give a 91 year old a chance despite all his "wrong doings" in the past as I don't see a better choice to unseat the current one? I would , because if he doesn't, we can always vote them out in the next election.
