FORMER finance minister Lim Guan Eng today denied he received any kickback for a workers’ dormitory as the project was not even awarded to the company which allegedly paid him a bribe of RM372,009.
The DAP secretary-general was earlier charged with abusing his power as Penang chief minister and Penang Development Corporation chairman for gratification between August 2013 and March 2016.
Lim was charged along with his wife, Betty Chew, and business executive Phang Li Koon at the Butterworth Sessions Court in Penang earlier today, where all three pleaded not guilty.
He told reporters the kickbacks he allegedly received from awarding a RM11.61 million workers’ dormitory project in Juru and Batu Kawan were not true as the project which was allegedly awarded to Magnificent Emblem Sdn Bhd was re-tendered.
“That company involved did not get the project. It was re-tendered. Another company was awarded (the project),” Lim said at a press conference at his parliamentary office.
The Bagan MP claimed he and his family did not have any possession of illegal money and challenged the authorities to prove it.
“They are unable to show we have in our possession corruption money. Where is the corruption,” Lim said.
Lim also urged the authorities to not go after his family and train their guns on him alone.
“This is political revenge on me. If you want to take action, take action on me.
“Why go after my wife who has not been involved? We will fight harder as they involve my family who has no clue.”
Chew earlier today was charged with receiving RM372,009 in kickbacks into her personal account for the project.
Lim said the money in Chew’s account was consultancy fees.
“This is legal fees my wife obtained as a lawyer. I am very upset. You want to go for me. Not go after her,” he said.
Yesterday, Lim pleaded not guilty at the Butterworth Sessions Court to receiving a RM3.3 million bribe for awarding the Penang undress tunnel project worth RM6.34 billion to Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd. – August 11, 2020.
