Guan Eng pleads not guilty to receiving RM3.3 million bribe

FORMER finance minister Lim Guan Eng pleaded not guilty to receiving a RM3.3 million bribe for awarding the Penang undersea tunnel project worth RM6.34 billion to Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd.

This is the second charge Lim was slapped with in connection with the undersea tunnel project in Penang.

At the Butterworth Sessions Court today, Lim was accused of committing the offence during his tenure as chief minister from January 2011 to August 2017.

Lim pleaded “not guilty” when the charge was read out to him before judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid.

The court granted Lim bail of RM1 million in two sureties.

Azhari allowed an extension of the RM1 million bail from Lim’s first charge, as well as the prosecution’s application to transfer the case so that it can be jointly heard at a special corruption court in Kuala Lumpur.

The Bagan MP’s legal team included Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, Jelutong MP R.S.N. Rayer and V. Vemal Arasan.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib assisted by DPPs Mohd Mukhzany Fariz Mohd Mokhtar and Francine Cheryl Rajendram.

On Friday, Lim claimed trial at the special corruption court in Kuala Lumpur for soliciting a 10% bribe from the profits of the RM6.3 billion highway and undersea tunnel projects.

He is also expected to be jointly charged with his wife, Betty Chew, with a separate case tomorrow, believed to be over the purchase of their bungalow in 2015. – August 10, 2020.

  • The word "receiving" is not even stated in the charge. The DPPs ought to be ashamed of their complicity.
