THE government will not stop a demonstration planned next month by Muslim groups, including PAS and Umno, to protest against Putrajaya’s plan to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Putrajaya allowed freedom of expression and police would only monitor the protest scheduled for December 8.
“The protest is allowed under the Peaceful Assembly Act. We are taking an open approach because we are a democratic country.
“We are open to anyone who wants to air their concerns,” Muhyiddin told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
However he refused to confirm if anyone had submitted an application for the rally.
He advised the organisers not to cause any trouble.
“Don’t issues statements that are provocative, including those which touch on race and religion,” he added.
Plans for the protest were announced by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Saturday night at a unity gathering of Muslim groups, including PAS and Umno, in Pasir Salak, Perak. – November 19, 2018.
