THE International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) staff and students have welcomed the appointment of Education Minister Maszlee Malik as the university’s seventh president.

In a statement issued by IIUM’s corporate communications division today, it said that the university’s management viewed Maszlee as an ideal candidate as he was a former IIUM lecturer.

“Maszlee has extensive experiences in the IIUM environment as he was once headed the IIUM Academic Staff Association to champion the rights and to guarantee the welfare of the lecturers.

“Although he is busy performing his duties as education minister, Maszlee has expressed his willingness to hold the post of IIUM president for a three-year term and he has also expressed his commitment not to receive any remuneration during his tenure,” the statement read.

Maszlee’s appointment was also supported by IIUM Rector Prof Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, who emphasised the importance of upholding university autonomy to create a teaching and learning ecosystem capable of producing holistic graduates. – Bernama, September 5, 2018.

  • Its not about the money la.. cant he understand the simple logic.. its s simple case of conflict of interest and also puts IIUM in a preferential & biased position, irrespective of the non-executive role of the President.

  • You don't get it, do you? It's not about the money. If you cannot see this as a conflict of interest, it's better to resign as Education Minister.

  • Surely its not a matter about salary. Its about conflict of interest and also his time in running the Education Ministry which is already a very challenging task and the fact that he is still struggling to get his acts together as the Education Minister.
