PAKATAN Harapan has retained the Sungai Kandis state seat in Selangor with a smaller majority due to the low voter turnout of 49.4%.
PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni obtained 15,427 votes while Barisan Nasional’s Lokman Noor Adam took 9,585 votes to give the former a 5,842-vote majority, the Election Commission said.
Independent K. Murthy had 97 votes.
The result was announced by returning officer Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad at 9.25pm.
At 49.4%, this by-election is the second lowest-ever turnout recorded.
EC deputy chairman Othman Mahmood said the record was set in 2009.
“The lowest turnout of 46% was recorded in the Penanti (in Penang) by-election in 2009,” said Othman.
During the recent general election, turnout for the Sungai Kandis seat was at around 85%.
This is the first by-election following the general election on May 9. The seat fell vacant after assemblyman Shuhaimie Shafiei died on July 2.
In May, Shuhaimie polled 23,998 votes to win with a majority of 12,480.
BN’s Kamaruzzaman Johari received 11,518 votes while PAS’ Mohd Yusof Abdullah had 7,573. PRM’s Hanafiah Husin mustered only 76 votes out of 50,800. – August 4, 2018.
