THE Pakatan Harapan government has ended the services of Barisan Nasional political appointee Mohamad Sahfri Ab Aziz, who chaired the Malaysia Stadium Corporation.

His services were terminated last week in a letter issued by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Syed Saddiq, in the letter, cited Section 9(1) of the Malaysia Stadium Corporation Act 2010 for the termination, with immediate effect.

The letter, addressed to Sahfri, was mailed to the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre.

The Malaysian Insight is attempting to get comments from Sahfri, who was previously Umno Youth assistant secretary when Khairy Jamaluddin was the wing’s chief.

The termination of Sahfri’s services came amid the PH government’s move to flush out political appointees in government-linked corporations and diplomats from the Najib Razak era.

Yesterday, Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi was removed as National Sports Institute (ISN) chairman with immediate effect.

Azim, a former Umno treasurer, said he had expected the axe.

“I think it’s because I was a political appointee. I was appointed by the previous minister,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

He was appointed by former youth and sports minister Khairy in May last year, ahead of the Sea Games in August.

However, Azim said he is still Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) deputy president, and will head the national contingent to the Asian Games in Indonesia next month.

He said his position as contingent head was decided by OCM, and has nothing to do with ISN.

“My job as contingent head is done once the Asian Games are concluded.

“But, it is not the end for me. I can focus more on my role in OCM.

“Just because I am no longer in ISN, it doesn’t mean I cannot contribute to Malaysian sports.” – July 17, 2018.
