THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will come under scrutiny, following a cabinet decision today to reopen investigations into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party will meet the attorney-general to discuss the scope of the investigations.

He said this is because only the attorney-general has the power to order police to reopen investigations.

“The cabinet has endorsed the view that investigations be reopened.

“Let’s discuss this with the A-G, and let it be announced later then, as he is the one handling the legal terms of the case,” he told reporters at the DAP headquarters.

On July 16, 2009, Teoh was found dead on the fifth floor of the MACC office after being questioned for 11 hours as a witness in a case involving the alleged misappropriation of allocations for several assemblymen.

He was the political secretary to former Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah.

On May 12, 2012 Putrajaya and the MACC admitted negligence in the death of Teoh, and were directed by the court to pay his family RM600,000 in damages and RM60,000 in costs.

Teoh’s family lawyer at that time, Gobind Singh Deo, said the family wanted police to conduct further investigations into the death and charge those responsible.

“I think this is a great victory for the Teoh family. After six years of legal battles, they now have an acknowledgment by the MACC and government that they are responsible for his death.

“We will continue to push the police for action in the matter. We have done all we possibly can in the matter legally. It is now for the police to do the needful and we will not stop pushing for justice for Teoh Beng Hock,” Gobind said at that time.

Gobind said today if the MACC is being investigated, then officers involved in Teo’s death will have to be suspended.

“If in-depth investigations have to take place against specific officers, then by right those officers should be suspended and allow investigations to proceed.”

Meanwhile, Beng Hock’s sister, Teo Lee Lan,  hopes that the new Pakatan Harapan government would bring justice to her brother.

She also thanked the PH government for reopening the case.

“It is the first step in finding the truth and to know the mastermind,” she said.

She also singled out the five officers – former Selangor MACC deputy chief Hishamuddin Hashim, Selangor MACC investigations chief Hairul Ilham Hamzah, investigating officer Mohd Anuar Ismail, interrogation officer Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus and Klang MACC assistant enforcement officer Zulkefly Aziz – and those involved in the case to be suspended pending further investigations. – June 20, 2018.
