A WHOPPING RM114 million in cash was seized by police in raids at a condo unit in Pavilion Residences linked to investigations into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Amar Singh led the series of raids that began on May 18 and which saw 72 luggage bags containing money and valuables impounded.

Amar today said 35 of the 72 luggage bags seized contained cash while 37 held jewellery and other valuables that were yet to be valued.

The money is in Bank Negara’s safekeeping while the valuables are “under lock and key in Bukit Aman” at federal police headquarters. “The keys to the safe are held by two officers,” said Amar.

Amar said the cash came up to RM114 million in 26 foreign currencies while the jewellery and watches would be valued by experts on Monday.

All the bags, cash and valuables confiscated were from a vacant unit; the two other units in the building that were raided belonged to Najib’s son and daughter, he said.

Police searched 12 premises in the past week in connection with 1MDB probe.

Amar said police are investigating the case under the Anti Money Laundering Act and will soon record the statements of Najib’s son Ashman and daughter Nooryana.  – May 25, 2018.
