SARAH Irdina Mohammad Ariff, the activist who set youths in solidarity under #FreeSarah, was released from police custody early this morning after being questioned for allegedly promoting an anti-government demonstration.

She was questioned under the Sedition Act before being taken to the Jinjang lock-up last night from where she was released about 1am.

“Sarah Irdina is OUT! But the fight is NOT over. While we celebrate this news, let’s never forget what they did.

“They arrested a 20-year-old girl for one tweet. They were so scared that they wanted to keep her in lockup,” MISI: Solidariti tweeted at 1am today.

Yesterday MISI: Solidariti tweeted that the authorities intimidated Sarah’s mother, raided the family home and confiscated her phone, calling the action “barbaric”.

“Seeing one of ours being silenced and harassed by the authorities is infuriating.

MISI: Solidariti empowers direct action in Malaysian activism among young people.

Campaigns the organisation is fighting for include the push for the passing of the Independent Police Complaints of Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) bill and decriminalising suicide in Malaysia.

Together with Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR), the youths are demanding for the resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, the convening of Parliament and the ending of the Emergency Proclamation.

#FreeSarah came to trend on the social media page as many others poured support for Sarah and the fight that she is championing.

Sarah was arrested for a tweet on July 1 under MISI: Solidariti profile, listing the three demands of the black flag movement.

She is being investigated under Section 4(1) of Sedition Act for acts with seditious tendency which include uttering seditious words and distributing.

She can be fined up to RM5,000 or sentenced to prison for not more than three years, or both, if convicted.

Police have been questioning activists and participants of the “Konvoi #Lawan” protest that took place on July 24, where individuals waved black flags from vehicles.

The SSR group estimated that more than 100 vehicles joined the protest and the number could have been bigger if not for the police.

The group has urged the public to join in another street protest in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur. – July 30, 2021.
