POLICE brought the “Konvoi #lawan” protest to a stop in several areas and arrested three individuals in a clear breach of the right to protest peacefully, the event organiser Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) said today.

SSR claimed police had harassed and intimidated the participants and stopped them from continuing with the protest which was supposed to have been held from 11am to 5pm.

The protest involved participants protesting from their vehicles while waving black flags, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, a full parliamentary sitting and a moratorium on bank loan repayments for all.

“We were told police had intimidated participants in Cyberjaya, Manjung (Perak), Malacca, Quayside Mall (Kuala Langat), Kuching (Sarawak) and Temerloh (Pahang),” SSR said in a statement.

“Although we had followed the guidelines, police stopped participants from protesting without any clear reason,” SSR said in a statement.

SSR said the arrests were made in Temerloh, Pahang, adding that legal assistance will be provided to the three.

“Those arrested will receive the necessary assistance from SSR and we believe the intimidation was a direct order from the Home Minister (Hamzah Zainudin).”

The group estimated that more than 100 vehicles joined the protest and the number could have been bigger if not for the police.

“This, however, will not stop us from criticising the government. We will continue to pressure Perikatan Nasional to meet our three demands,” the group said, adding that a bigger protest is scheduled on July 31. – July 24, 2021.
