Selected sectors allowed to run at full capacity from tomorrow

SECTORS that were allowed to operate at limited capacity during the first three phases of the movement-control order (MCO) will be permitted to work at full capacity starting tomorrow.

International Trade and Industry Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali said companies that have obtained approval to open need not re-apply for permission.

“Realising the pressing need to overcome the current economic crisis, the government has agreed to let certain sectors of the economy, which have been allowed to operate during the first, second and third phases of the MCO, increase their operations to full capacity and to operate without time restrictions and according to the need of their respective industries,” he said in a statement today.

It is still mandatory for the companies to adhere to the guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) which include physical distancing of workers and hygiene measures.

Non-compliance will result in the immediate cancellation of the permit to operate and legal action, he said.

“While the government has allowed this leeway, the people and company owners will have to adapt to the new normal by practising social distancing at work, maintaining good hygiene and following health guidelines,” Azmin said.

The decision was discussed by the Economic Action Council (EAC) and subsequently approved by the National Security Council chaired by the prime minister. Cabinet members and chief ministers were present when the proposal was approved.

The relaxation of restrictions, said Azmin, will enable the recovery of the goods and services supply chains to fulfil domestic and international demands.

This, he said, would positively impact business organisations especially small and medium enterprises.

The MCO, which was enforced on March 18, has been extended until May 12.

Meanwhile, the construction, machinery and equipment, aerospace and automative industries are among the sectors allowed to operate fully during the shutdown

Science, professional and technical services are also allowed to resume fully , while traditional and conventional medical practices as well as hardware shops, electrical and electronic shops, and optometrists can open for business. – April 28, 2020.

  • Because of your hotel move there was a 10 days stand still ie delayed action to counter the virus and now you decided to open up for certain sectors by TOMORROW with in depth details provided which would certainly leads to confusion beginning TOMORROW and with this opening placing more people exposed our effected cases figures would eventually rise up. Has your SOP been given the go a head by MOH? Thanks Azmin to cater for a few you jeopardise the many. What is a month away that you need to open this a few TOMORROW??

  • It is a good first step but the government should not be pressured by money-obsessed businessmen to prematurely lift the MCO. The government has to stick to a realistic exit strategy. Fully opening up the country now will negate all these weeks of pain and sacrifice. Health first, then wealth.
