YANG di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has picked Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as the next prime minister, the palace said in a statement today.
Muhyiddin will take the oath of office as the country’s eighth prime minister at Istana Negara tomorrow at 10.30am.
In issuing the statement, the comptroller of the Royal Household, Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, said the decision was made after the Agong interviewed MPs on Tuesday and Wednesday.
He said the king had followed through and consulted with party leaders again earlier today.
“After receiving representation from all leaders representing their respective parties and independent Dewan Rakyat members, in the opinion of his royal highness, the MP likely to enjoy majority confidence among his fellow MPs is Muhyiddin Yassin, from Pagoh,” he said.
This being the case, the king has appointed Muhyiddin as prime minister in accordance with Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the federal constitution.
However, the statement did not provide a breakdown of MPs that had chosen to support Muhyiddin.
In an immediate reaction, Muhyiddin thanked the king for trusting him.
The Pagoh MP said he hoped all Malaysians will accept the decision.
“I am grateful to Allah for His reward that I am chosen to be prime minister, with the blessing of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.
“I hope that all Malaysians will accept this decision announced by Istana Negara,” he told reporters outside his home in Damansara today. – February 29, 2020.
