POLICE have declared the Malaysian Muslim Students Coalition’s (Gamis) anti-Chinese education protest unlawful but the group proceeded anyway with its demonstration in Kuala Lumpur today.

Some 400 men in Malay “tanjak” headgear and women in purdah marched against Dong Zong and to rally public support for Jawi writing in national and national-type schools, to which last the Chinese education group is opposed.

The march began around 2.30pm at Masjid Jamek and ended at the Sogo shopping complex, where speeches were heard.

Police presence appeared to be minimal, with no more than 30 officers visible.

The protestors carried banners that read “Defend Jawi” and “Ban Dong Zong” as well as handwritten posters that said ”Don’t challenge the Malays” (Jangan cabar orang Melayu) and “For the sake of Islam” (Demi Islam).

The rally proceeded as planned even though Dong Jiao Zong, of which Dong Zong is a component, had called off a conference on Saturday to discuss the introduction of Jawi writing in the vernacular schools.

The police had obtained a court order preventing the umbrella Chinese group of school teachers and vernacular school committees from holding the event.

City police yesterday also said that Gamis had failed to meet the Peaceful Assembly Act requirements to submit notification of the street rally, thereby making the event illegal. – January 1, 2020.

  • Illegal! But will the police take action ? If it doesn't, it must explain why? If a law is broken, why shouldn't the law apply to them as it would to non-Muslims doing the same?

Wow, our police is toothless? What a joke....so Muslim/Malays have a no arrest card for committing criminal acts?

  • If Jawi is so important to those Muslim students, then why don't they just study it and leave others who don't want to, out of it. Why does everything important to certain Muslims have to be imposed on others?
