BARISAN Nasional has won the Tanjung Piai by-election with a majority of 15,086 votes, announced the Election Commission.

BN’s Wee Jeck Seng polled 25,466 votes to the 10,380 obtained by PH’s Karmaine Sardini.

Gerakan’s Wendy Subramaniam won 1,707 votes, while Berjasa’s Badrulhisham Abdul Aziz took 850.

The two independent candidates, Ang Chuan Lock and Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar, got 380 and 32 votes, respectively.

Wee’s total tonight is about 22% more than the 20,731 votes he received in the 14th general election last year, when he lost the seat to the PH candidate.

His win marks the third time he will represent the Johor federal constituency.

The votes were tallied at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim in Pontian after polling closed at 5.30pm.

BN leaders and supporters gathered at the hall are in a celebratory mood.

The early results showed PH losing at all voting stations.

It was reported earlier that in the Chinese-majority Pekan Nanas Timur, the ruling pact lost in three streams (two, three and six) with counting under way for the other four streams.

In GE14, BN lost in the said three streams.

BN supporters had begun celebrating even before the final tally, with shouts of “Thank you, Tg Piai” and “Tg Piai is ours” ringing out at the pact’s command centre in Pontian.

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, MCA president Wee Ka Siong and other coalition leaders were spotted among the flag-waving crowd.

Joining the early celebration were a few officials from PAS, which is backing the BN candidate as part of its cooperation with Umno.

“Our unity pact is working. This is just the start. We are confident it will spread to other areas,” said Kuala Selangor PAS commissioner Muhammad Rashid Muhammad Kassim.

Tg Piai has 52,986 voters, comprising 57% Malays, Chinese (42%) and Indians (1%).

The by-election was called following the death of Dr Md Farid Md Rafik on September 21 due to heart complications. He was 42.

Farid, who was a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and an anaesthesiologist by profession, won the seat for PH last year.

He polled 21,255 votes to beat Wee (20,731) and PAS’ Nordin Othman (2,962) with a 524-vote majority. – November 16, 2019.

  • Dr M is out of touch with the rakyat in the street. Time for him to make way for a people centric leader. No more second national car project and no more harbouring a foreign wanted criminal and allowing him to insult the people of Malaysia. Mahathir is in denial refuses to recognise that the rakyat is angry with him and the government for failing to keep election promises. The rakyat rules ok.

  • This is a clear message to both sides of the divide that the non-Malay vote cannot be taken for granted.

  • DMM shd take full responsibility for PH defeat due his failure to b the PM for "Malaysians" and irrational racial statements & behaviour. This result is likely to continue for PH if nothing is done on the leadershp & irrational policies . PKR & DAP coalition with BERSATU shd also b reconsidered. Tq Tg Piai voters. U all have send the right message to PH govt on behalf of all Malaysians Tq Tq

  • A good lesson for PH, in particular their choice for a divisive, pro-islamist DR Mahathir Mohamed. The Conference of Malay Dignity with PAS, UMNO and other KKK type members caused this loss. This is a clear message to PH, that despite what UMNO and BN did to the country, what DR M's policies are are WORSE. This is a message to DR Mahathir to RESIGN and hand over power to Anwar Ibrahim. Malu lah PH. You have lost sight of what is going on , on the ground. Malays, Chinese, Indians and others dont want another BN -UMNO led party, but they will vote anybody else rather than PH because of the stupid policies. We have an Economic Minister who goes on $300,000 holidays without paying for it, we have a KangKong Education Minister who is uneducated-wanting black shoes for kids, who wants to turn Malaysian education system to that of a caliphate. We have dozens of idiots who are unqualified in the government-patronage, cronies etc. Worse still every manifesto that PH made prior to the elections is in the dustbin. Where is the repeal of SOSMA? PH uses it to kill dissent. Where is the repeal of the death penalty? Why do we have Naik, a Terrorist who hates other religions-Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Jews-who berates Indians-who is allied to ISIS and Al quead-be praised and given sanctuary when he is wanted by India and ally of Malaysia. Our Airport Authority is in te shit hole-all the bums hired are unqualified. We are going down that slippery slope. Basically, Malaysians are unhappy with DR M and his side kicks. Get rid of the the problems and rebuild PH-otherwise we will have the dynasties ruling Malaysia again-Mahathirs son, Hussein Onn's son or Najib himself may reappear. All these are possibilities. PH lost because people are QUICKLY losing faith in the coalition.

  • We will not shout BN for this victory, but DSAI! DSAI! DSAI!

Do not be deluded. Victory had nothing to do with your pact, when compared to PH's failure to deliuert their manifesto.

  • It is a foregone conclusion PH is going to be trounced in Tg Piai only how big is the margin. TDM has to gracefully step down for Anwar before it is too late. Both Malays and Nons are upset with Bersatu's policies and half bake ministers who are totally ignorant of governing their respective portfolios. The message is clearly written on the wall. To lose by such a big margin for an incumbent is a disgrace.
