INSPECTOR–GENERAL of Police Abdul Hamid Bador today admitted fugitive financier Low Taek Jho has found protection from a certain “irresponsible” country.

Hamid said the country has refused to cooperate with Malaysia, making it difficult to bring the wanted businessman back home to face charges.

“We have asked that country to cooperate and send Jho Low back but he seems to be above the law with protection from that particular country.”

“We have used all sorts of ways but the country gave many reasons (to keep Low),” he said in a press conference today in Tawau.

Hamid said he was even informed that Low had undergone surgery to change his face.

Nevertheless, Hamid said his men would persist in efforts to bring Low back to Malaysia by the end of the year.

“I am still using a soft approach. Whatever they want we will try to fulfil their terms. I will be willing to listen, but they must give us Jho Low.”

Hamid said countries must cooperate with one another and must not protect a criminal just because of an old political.connection.

“It is a crime. He has taken money and now he is getting protection.”

Hamid declined to name the country that has given Low safe haven.

Hamid said he was also looking into claims that Low also held a Cypriot passport.

“We received information that he exploited the fact that the country’s economy not doing well and that the county was in need of money.

On the claims of police torture by suspects detained under Sosma for alleged links to the Tamil Tigers, Hamid urged the suspects’ lawyers to file a police report.

“I trust my men. CCTVs are there so I welcome them if they have evidence produce in court. I am concerned about this and I would not allow my men to even pull their ears.” – November 4, 2019.

  • We are doing the same for ZN: giving protection to a criminal and refusing to extradite him. How can we then pass judgement on other countries. Getting a taste of our own medicine?
