BARISAN Nasional has filed suits against its former MPs, Bagan Serai lawmaker Noor Azmi Ghazali and Masjid Tanah representative Mas Ermieyati Samsudin to demand repayment for funds the coalition had spent on their election campaigns, which they won in GE14.
Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said tonight that the BN lawyers have filed writs of summons against the two MPs, who have since left the party.
Last month, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party would file suits against those who have left.
He said Umno wanted all its former MPs who quit “pay off their debt”, referring to funds the party put into their campaigns and which allowed them to win in the 14th general election in May last year.
To date, 17 MPs have quit the party, leaving Umno with only 37 MPs in Dewan Rakyat.
Of the 17, three – Ermieyati, Mustapa Mohamed (Jeli) and Azmi (Bagan Serai) – have joined Bersatu while Rozman Isli (Labuan) has joined Warisan.
On the rumours that six MPs wanting to rejoin Umno, Annuar said Umno has yet to have any official discussions on the issue.
He said the party has yet to receive any application even though he heard rumours about it.
“We are an open party. In this situation we understand the predicament our friends (former MPs) are going through to make a decision like that.
“If they have a change of mind then we can discuss it.” – January 15, 2019.
