FORMER prime minister Najib Razak expressed surprise that he was charged despite returning an RM2 billion donation, a part of the money channelled into his accounts.
“It’s very strange that when I received RM2 billion, I was charged. And when I returned the RM2 billion, I was also charged. It is very odd that people who return money are charged.
“Never mind. That is my personal chapter. I hope it will be managed well,” the Pekan MP told Parliament while debating the 11th Malaysia Plan mid-term review bill today.
Najib has always maintained that the RM2.6 billion deposited into his accounts was a donation from the late King Abdullah Abdulaziz Al Saud towards the 2013 elections.
He said subsequently the money was returned back to the Saudis.
He is currently facing a slew of graft charges in relation to the money which the authorities said came from 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
This is the second time Najib has taken part in a parliamentary debate since Barisan Nasional lost the May 9 elections.
During the debate, Najib brought up the 1MDB scandal and said he hoped all the money will be returned to Malaysia.
He said he wanted to get back the money after the 14th general election.
“I wanted to recover 1MDB’s money after the elections. That’s why we had a settlement agreement with them (Abu Dhabi) to pay us back. We have until 2020,” said Najib.
Najib, who was charged with 32 counts of corruption, money laundering and abuse of power, said he had negotiated with United Arab Emirates to preserve their diplomatic ties with Malaysia.
“I called the Abu Dhabi crown prince to settle because I wanted to preserve our diplomatic relationship with UAE.
“We made an agreement in 2015 where we received US$1 billion from IPIC (International Petroleum Investment Company) and they agree to repay US$3.5 billion to us.
“This is what is called changing of asset for debt and we will get back US$6 billion. I hope the Pakatan Harapan government will continue this as we want to get back all the money.”
His administration had also banked on 1MDB’s Tun Razak Exchange and Bandar Malaysia, hoping they would increase in value to repay 1MDB debts.
“When the value of Bandar Malaysia goes up, we can pay 1MDB’s debts. Don’t politicise this. We want all the money returned to Malaysians,” said Najib. – October 23, 2018.
