Methanol poisoning death toll stands at 40

THREE more victims of methanol poisoning died today, bringing the total number of deaths to 40.

The three latest deaths were from Perak, Selangor and Negri Sembilan, the Health Ministry said in statement.

From September 15 to noon today, the number of deaths in Selangor was 24, Perak (4), Kuala Lumpur (11) and Negri Sembilan (1), said director-general of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The ministry has also received 95 case notifications of methanol poisoning from its health facilities for the same period, he said.

There were 17 patients receiving treatment in six hospitals in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak and Negri Sembilan.

Out of the 17, seven were in critical condition.

Meanwhile, eight patients, whose conditions had stabilised, had been discharged, he said.

From the 95 cases, 22 were Malaysians, Nepalese (33), Myanmar (21), Bangladeshis (10), Indians (4), Indonesian (1) and unknown (4).

“The ministry has carried out educational and awareness sessions on methanol poisoning, among those at high risk, such as factory workers and their family members and friends,” he said. – September 27, 2018.
