IT is only honourable for MCA president Liow Tiong Lai to resign if he feels responsible for the party’s shortcomings, said Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.

Annuar said he hoped Liow would respect Umno and not interfere in its decision to cooperate with PAS.

He said Liow should find ways to strengthen his party, instead of focusing on another party’s matters.

“My advice to MCA is that if it wants to find new strength and reinvent itself, and if the core leadership feels responsible for the party’s weaknesses, the only honourable thing to do is to resign, like what Najib Razak did.

“One of the possibilities is for Liow to pave the way for new leaders,” he said today at PWTC.

He was commenting on Liow’s statement that said Barisan Nasional may disband if Umno forms a coalition with the Islamist party.

Annuar said Liow made the statement in his own personal capacity and it did not reflect the sentiment of MCA’s members and the Chinese community.

He stressed that cooperation among opposition parties was needed and that opposition parties could not stand alone.

“Umno’s policy is to form a cooperation (with PAS) as opposition parties,” he said.

Annuar said Liow’s words were irrelevant and reflected MCA’s performance under Liow’s leadership.

“I think what was said by Liow was irrelevant and was a view I find very shallow.”

He also said that BN may see a few changes in the future, but did not elaborate on what they were.

Liow had said he opposed Umno’s alliance with PAS as it might cause problems with racial and religious matters. – September 24, 2018.
