A DIVORCEE faces public caning in Terengganu after she pleaded guilty to attempting to offer sexual services at a hotel, reported The Star.
The daily said the 30-year-old woman, who was charged at the Shariah High Court in Kuala Terengganu today, faces six strokes of the rotan after she pleaded guilty.
The charge sheet said that she was found to be preparing to offer sexual services to a man in a hotel room about 11.45pm on September 17.
She was caught in a raid by the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department.
She was charged under Section 25 of the Shariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) Enactment 2001 and faces a jail term of no more than three years, or a fine of no more than RM5,000, or six whips of the rotan, or any combination of the punishments.
The court will decide on the sentence on Thursday.
If she is handed down whipping as punishment, she will follow the caning meted out to two women on September 3 for attempting to have same-sex relations in a car in Dungun.
The sentence was heavily criticised by civil society and politicians, including Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had described the caning of the duo as an act that lacked “mercy” and did not portray true Islam.
PAS, which rules the state, however, said the public caning served as “free marketing” for the Islamic shariah administration that PAS wants to implement. – September 23, 2018.
