Why should Umno crawl to PAS for help, says Tengku Razaleigh

IT is “illogical” for Umno, which has more MPs, to crawl to PAS for help, Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Hamzah said in response to the heated debate over whether the two parties should form a political cooperation.

The chairman of Umno’s council of advisers said Umno should not be looking for a tie-up with the Islamist party but work towards strengthening itself.

“I think it is too early; we are a huge party. In Parliament, Umno has more members of parliament. Why should we crawl around looking for more people?

“It is illogical. As chairman of the council of advisers, why would I accept such a suggestion?” the Umno veteran, also known as Ku Li, said at his residence in Kuala Lumpur today.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said after attending the recent PAS muktamar in Kuala Terengganu that any cooperation with PAS would not only revolve around religion and that, because of the new political landscape, Umno had to unite with other opposition parties.

Ku Li, however, said he was unsure if the cooperation with PAS had been discussed with Umno’s Supreme Council or whether an unofficial pact had been formed among them.

Ku Li said cooperating with other parties should not be Umno’s focus and that effort should instead be on strengthening the party internally.

“I want to see my party strong again and able to provide appropriate leadership for the country through its Malay leadership,” he said.

According to the Gua Musang MP, any “pact” between Umno and PAS had not been approved by a majority of its grassroots leaders and members, especially in the east coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu.

In the 14th general election, Umno received a thorough thumping in both states, with PAS winning with a larger share of the votes compared with the last election in Kelantan, and succeeding in recapturing Terengganu.

“I know, I am from Kelantan. Kelantan Umno is angry and disagrees with PAS. They said there is no sincerity. Look at the way its people voted in the election.

“Umno was rejected for PAS. PAS took power from our hands in Terengganu. There was no cooperation at all. Why would they reconcile with us after two days? That is the interpretation of regular folk.” – September 22, 2018.

  • Election is a chance for you to make a stand. It is not solely for the winning a seat. You call yourself a true politician?
