MALAYSIA will not recognise same-sex marriages although it is considered a human right in western countries, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

He said the government agreed with the National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) on many points concerning the welfare and right to safety of sexual minorities, but Malaysia still had a different value system from the west.

“While we agree with Suhakam (on many points), our value system is not the same as the western one.

“They are more free but there are things that are unacceptable in Malaysia although it’s accepted as a human right in western countries,” the prime minister said after chairing a special cabinet meeting on anti-corruption in Putrajaya.

“We cannot accept LGBT or same sex marriages. Our concept of marriage remains the same that a couple (is a man and woman) with their own or adopted children.

“But two men or two women is not considered a family,” said Dr Mahathir.

Suhakam had recently met the government to ask for amendments to the Suhakam Act and to ratify seven conventions regarding human rights, among them, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Suhakam recently criticised the shariah caning of two women who attempted to have sex in Terengganu.

In July, the national human rights body had also ticked off the Youth and Sports Ministry for failing to stand by Numan Afifi Saadan, a LGBT advocate who was also press officer to minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman. – September 21, 2018.

  • And therein lies the danger, when a value system masquerades as human 'rights'. Right said, Mr PM.

  • Thank you PM. We don't want the left promoting what they cannot justify. The ancient Romans and prior have always recognised marriage at the base level of definition and the foundation of families who are the core units that make up a nation. We must be wary of financed propaganda designed to weaken our common sense and distort natural law.

  • The definition of not accepting and rejecting can be quite different. For example, a Muslim will not accept Christianity as his prime belief but he will not be bothered by others practising Christianity. On the contrary a rejection which forcibly prohibits others from practising what they believe in is an infringement of human rights. The person who rejects in this manner is no less than an extremist.
