MUSTAPA Mohamed did not quit Umno because of its collaboration with PAS, party secretary-general Annuar Musa said today.
But he said the Jeli MP was recently investigated along with others over funds the state chapter received before the 14th general election.
“I know Tok Pa (Mustapa) didn’t leave because Umno worked with PAS. The issue wasn’t that,” Annuar told a press briefing at the Umno headquarters today.
Mustapa, who is the Jeli MP, and two other party leaders are under investigation for receiving a substantial amount of funds together prior to the elections.
When asked if this was the reason Mustapa resigned, Annuar said he didn’t know.
“Maybe they can’t handle the stress,” he added.
The Malaysian Insight is contacting Mustapa to respond to Annuar’s claims about the investigation.
Umno was rocked this week when two of its former ministers and current lawmakers Mustapa and Anifah Aman, resigned.
Mustapa said he has lost faith in the party’s ability to rejuvenate itself after announcing plans to partner PAS while Anifah quit because he could not honour his promises to Sabah.
Mustapa, who was recently elected to Umno’s Supreme Council, declined to be appointed as the Umno Kelantan liaison chief.
The resignations come just days after Umno president Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi made history by attending the PAS annual congress in Kuala Terengganu on Saturday.
The 72-year-old Umno will also hold its annual congress on September 29-30. – September 20, 2018.
