PORT Dickson MP Danyal Balagopal Abdullah’s sincerity was what got Anwar Ibrahim to agree to choose the seat in his bid to return to Parliament.
The PKR president-elect told Astro Awani that he was impressed with the reasons given by Danyal, who today announced that he was giving up the seat for the former.
“He was serious, so I met him and asked him for a reason, and he said he will continue as an assistant to me in Teluk Kemang,” said Anwar, using the previous name for the Port Dickson constituency.
He said Danyal did not mention giving up the MP’s post, but told him that it would be an honour for Port Dickson and Negri Sembilan if he chose the seat.
“It was a good argument. I was impressed.”
Anwar said he had known the senior naval officer as an active PKR member in Perak for some time, and that Danyal’s “willingness to assist me was impressive”.
“The choice (of seats) given to me were one in the north, one in the central region and one in the south.
He said should he be elected as Port Dickson MP, he would boost the constituency’s status as a prime tourism destination.
Anwar said when he was in Hong Kong recently, he called Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and spoke about his decision to pick Port Dickson.
Reiterating his support for Dr Mahathir’s leadership, he confirmed that the Port Dickson contest would bring him a step closer to taking over as prime minister.
Danyal earlier today announced that he was giving up the Port Dickson seat so that Anwar could contest it in a by-election.
In the 14th general election, Danyal got 36,225 votes, defeating MIC’s V. Mogan (18,515) and PAS’ Mahfuz Roslan (6,594).
Among Port Dickson voters, 55% are non-Malays – 33% Chinese and 22% Indians – and 43% are Malays. – September 12, 2018.
