GIVEN a choice, even non-Muslims would choose shariah-compliant caning, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
“I am confident that if a comparison is made between shariah and civil caning, non-Muslims would choose Islamic caning, which educates and does not torture the offender,” said the 70-year-old on Facebook yesterday.
A minute-long clip of the Islamist party chief answering a query on the matter was uploaded with the post.
Hadi was replying to a question about Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s remarks on the caning punishment meted out to two women for same-sex relations recently.
Dr Mahathir had described the caning of the duo in Terengganu as an act that lacked “mercy” and did not portray the true Islam.
“This gives a bad image to Islam. That is why we think that even if there are such cases, consideration should be given under certain circumstances, where under Islam, the punishment can be made lighter while we give advice and so on.”
The women, aged 32 and 22, were each caned six times at the Kuala Terengganu shariah court, in front of some 100 witnesses, on September 3.
Local and international human rights groups have slammed the caning as archaic and inhumane. – September 10, 2018.
