THE appointment of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) president must be recommended by the government in accordance with the university’s constitution, said Rais Yatim.

The former IIUM president said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad or the cabinet should name the individual eligible for the position to avoid contravening Articles 25 and 26 on the appointment of the rector and president, as stated in the varsity’s charter.

“The government must nominate someone. Then, it won’t be a big problem,” he said today.

Rais was commenting on the appointment of Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik to the post, which has received flak from various parties, including Pakatan Harapan leaders.

In its 14th general election manifesto, PH pledged to return academic freedom to tertiary education institutions.

Rais said Maszlee should rethink his appointment as IIUM president as it affected the credibility and image of the PH government.
