THE government’s affirmative action will support all Malaysians, not just one race, said Anwar Ibrahim.

The incoming PKR president, speaking at the closing of the Congress on the Future of Bumiputeras and the Nation in Kuala Lumpur today, said there were Bumiputeras worried that the Pakatan Harapan government would cease providing them with opportunities.

At the same time, non-Bumiputeras fear that the new administration will neglect them.

“We want to tell everyone that we will not neglect anyone. We will help everyone,” said Anwar.

“Our affirmative action will be for everyone who deserves support.”

He confirmed that he had met with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to discuss the need to explain to the public that the government would continue protecting Malay rights.

“There are constitutional issues that we will never touch. These are the issues of race and religion, matters relating to Malay rights, and the role of Malays rulers.”

Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, in his closing speech, said the congress was aimed at creating a corruption-free Bumiputera society, not taking away the rights of other races.

“Our aim is to create a Bumiputera race of high integrity.

“And, we want to share our wealth and growth with all races, so that we can develop Malaysia.”

He warned Malays that they must put a stop to corrupt practices in business.

“Don’t be stuck in the old mindset. We are not corrupt Malays. If we don’t stop this, we will destroy the nation.” – September 1, 2018.
