Bring back Bank Bumiputra, Putrajaya told

K. Kabilan

Bank Bumiputra which had been established in 1965 to help Malay businesses was merged into Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings in 1999, and eventually became CIMB Bank.

THE government should bring back Bank Bumiputra to aid bumiputera businesses, a panel member at a bumiputera economic forum in Kuala Lumpur said today.

Property consultant Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman said the 1965 Bumiputera Economic Congress had proposed the setting up of a bank to specifically help Malay businesses, which resulted in the establishment of Bank Bumiputra.

The bank was merged into Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings in 1999, and eventually became CIMB Bank.

“We once again need Bank Bumiputra to help bumi businesses.

“And I hope the government will bring it back as a result of this year’s conference,” Abdul Rahim said during a panel discussion at the Congress on the Future of Bumiputeras and the Nation (KBN 2018), in Kuala Lumpur, today.

Abdul Rahim, who is the founder of property firm Rahim & Co, also said that many government agencies had failed in their task of assisting bumiputera businesses.

“The government must relook at these agencies and reappoint right people to run them. Do not appoint political appointees. Make appointments based on merit,” he said.

Other delegates said government agencies should be limited to being regulators, and not get involved in businesses.

“The government-linked companies (GLCs) control everything. Take a look at travel agencies. Tabung Haji has one. Even Felda and Bank Rakyat. Why?

“These government agencies should be doing things which the bumi businesses can’t do. If they build i-Phone type phones, it’s okay, but why are they involved in businesses which everyone else can do?” one delegate asked. – September 1, 2018.

  • Why don't you Bumiputras ask yourselves what you can do for your Country Malaysia instead of keep asking the Government for help?

  • Bumiputras got Bank Bumiputra but it got looted and suffered losses. The Malays dont mind as the loss was governments money. If you want a new Bank Bumiputras ensure the shareholders are Malays and not the government.
