Ex-spy chief linked to RM49 million scandal, says anti-graft agency

SOME US$12 million (RM49.5 million), believed to be funds misappropriated by the former government, was brought in through Kuala Lumpur International Airport just before the 14th general election, said MACC deputy chief commissioner Azam Baki.

Azam named Malaysia’s former spy chief, Hasanah Abdul Hamid, and eight others from the spy agency as suspects in this latest scandal unveiled by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Azam said the anti-graft agency seized US$6.3 million from several locations during a probe into alleged misappropriation of funds by former government intelligence officers.

The largest stash, US$4.07 million, was found in a rented condominium in Cyberjaya last night.

“We believe the total amount of US$12 million in government funds was misappropriated and my department is looking for the remaining amount.

“We are investigating how the cash was raised, and how it was brought into the country,” Azam said at the MACC’s headquarters in Putrajaya today.

“Is the money from 1MDB? Maybe,” he added, without elaboration on whether the money was meant for Barisan Nasional’s GE14 campaign.

Azam urged the public, including civil servants, to come forward if they had information, whether on the case or whereabouts of the remaining cash. 

“Those who come forward will be placed under witness protection and this includes those have the money in their keeping,” he said.

Hasanah was yesterday detained to assist in investigations into the arrest of seven former administrative and diplomatic officers from the Prime Minister’s Department.

A remand order was issued for her under Section 23 (1) of the MACC Act 2009, which prohibits using one’s office or position for gratification. – August 30, 2018.
