THE opposition Barisan Nasional will be allowed to audit the government’s accounts, said Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu last night, explaining the changes currently taking place in Putrajaya.
For the first time, ministers and deputy ministers together with Pakatan Harapan MPs will declare their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Amanah president said at a Bersatu Aidiladha open house.
“We are changing how things are handled. For the first time, we are going to let the opposition audit our accounts as well as having someone from BN to head the PAC.
“Ministers, deputy ministers and MPs will have to declare to MACC unlike before when the declaration was made to the prime minister. This is the biggest change that we have done in 100 days,” Mohamad, popularly known as Mat Sabu, told Bersatu members at the open house in Klang.
The former PAS deputy president also expressed confidence in Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, whom he said could fix the country’s economy like he did when he was Penang chief minister.
“We admit that when we took over the country, our financial status was heavy. We did not want to hide the RM1 trillion debt.
“This is what we call ‘new Malaysia’ under Pakatan Harapan. We promise to work hard but cut us some slack because we have little experience managing a country,” he said in front of 200 Bersatu supporters.
Mat Sabu said it was not easy to change his attitude as a former opposition man into a pro-government minister.
“Old habits die hard. Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) urged us, the ministers not to be very opposition-minded, but 40 years is not short.
“It is a very long time. To become a pro-government person, sometimes I feel a little awkward,” he added. – August 27, 2018.
