ANWAR Ibrahim says there’s a need for injustices and unjust decisions in his sodomy convictions to be corrected.

“I think that if there is any sense of justice there will also be the necessity to correct any inherent wrongs.

“So the judicial heads must now take the necessary immediate action,” he said during the launch of ‘Anwar Returns: The Final Twist’, a book by Australian lawyer Mark Trowell on the two sodomy trials.

However, he said that he was not interested in pursuing any action against the judges involved.

“I have no intention to take any action against the judges… they can sleep easy,” he added.

But, the incoming PKR president said that he had filed an action against lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, who had acted as the prosecutor in his second sodomy trial, for allegedly receiving RM9.5 million from then prime minister Najib Razak.

“We have already applied to the courts and through that the judges’ frivolous decisions will naturally be brought up,” Anwar said.

Anwar, 71, claims that his sodomy conviction in 2014 had violated his right to a fair trial, as Shafee had allegedly received funds from Najib.

In February 2015, the Federal Court, led by then chief justice Arifin Zakaria, upheld his conviction on a charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008, sending Anwar back to prison for five years.

Anwar was held at Sungai Buloh Prison and due to be released on June 8. But, he was given a full royal pardon and released in May after Pakatan Harapan won the general elections.

In 2000, the late High Court judge Arifin Jaka had sentenced Anwar to nine years in prison in his first sodomy case. The Federal Court overturned that conviction in 2004. – August 26, 2018.
