THE usual five-day fanfare surrounding Umno’s general assembly will be cut short to only two this year in its first assembly as an opposition party.

Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa told The Malaysian Insight the general assembly would be held on the last weekend of next month, which promises to be a full-day event.

“There are two days of the AGM but it is day and night. We start on Friday; we will have the opening followed by the meetings of the party’s three wings.

“The presidential speech will be on the following night. So it will be shorter but concise,” he said.

Annuar, however, said the excitement surrounding the assembly would be the same as in past years.

“Probably not as grand as before because of the shorter time, but the number of delegates will be the same.

“We will still have those shops. It will still be very grand, just like before. It remains an important occasion for us,” he said.

Umno has more than three million members and the assembly in previous years were attended by at least 2,700 delegates.

Shops are also set up selling clothes, foods and trinkets in an usually festive atmosphere at the Putra World Trade Centre. – August 25, 2018.
