More than two-thirds Malaysians approve of Pakatan, says survey

MORE than two-thirds (67%) of Malaysians approve of the new Pakatan Harapan government ahead of its 100th-day anniversary on Friday, according to a Merdeka Centre for Public Opinion survey.

Indian voters are the most satisfied with PH at 89%, followed by Chinese (79%), Sabah and Sarawak Bumiputera (62%) and Malay voters (58%).

More than half (55%) of the 1,160 respondents believe the country is now headed in the right direction, compared to 38% in a previous survey in April.

Six in 10 respondants are satisfied with PH’s management of the economy, compared with 34% in April.

Another 56% of the voters said that they were optimistic about the future of the economy, compared with 31% in April.

The same number of respondents said they were satisfied with PH for fulfilling its promises.

Among those satisfied with the PH government, 19% said its efficiency and governance is good and 12% said the economy is favourable. 

PH’s efforts to combat corruption are satisfactory to 7% .

Of those dissatisfied with the government, 29% say it is headed in the wrong direction on economic issues. They pick out unfavourable economic conditions (14%), high cost of living (7.8%) and wages (1.7%).

A total 14% said they were unhappy with the leadership in terms of its quality, failure to fulfil promises, and lack of welfare policies.

The survey was conducted on August 7-14 across 222 parliamentary constituencies. – August 15, 2018.
