Take action against friendly fire, PKR Wanita chief urges leadership

PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin has urged the party’s top leadership to take action against candidates who attack each other over the party polls.

The vice-presidential candidate said she had raised the issue in a political bureau meeting last night in an effort to ensure the campaign period ran smoothly.

“I will not lodge a report. For me, they are not at the same level as I am. The party itself can see the attacks are done openly and they can take action.

“The leaders should… take action against them to ensure that there are no more negative elements like this,” she told The Malaysian Insight at the Parliament building today.

The housing and local government minister was commenting on candidates from Rafizi Ramli’s camp that had openly attacked her.

Zuraida said Rafizi’s team should not employ below the belt tactics, which has since spilled over to involve other PH parties.

“I do not agree with these unethical, immoral and immature campaign (tactics).

“Making personal attacks and involving other component parties and the prime minister himself does not show the vision (of the candidates). This is simply unethical,” the Ampang lawmaker said.

She said PKR should set an example, having secured the most seats of all the coalition parties.

“Our members are disappointed. We have won; we should not be acting this way. We need to move on,” Zuraida said.

Among the attacks on Zuraida include claims she was corrupt and keeps on harping for government projects.

Claims had also surfaced that several candidates in PKR deputy president Azmin Ali’s camp were funded by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former finance minister Daim Zainuddin.

Ijok assemblymen Idris Ahmad had said Dr Mahathir and Daim were manipulating PKR leaders into destroying the party from within to prevent PKR president Anwar Ibrahim from becoming prime minister.

Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Xavier Jayakumar said disunity within the party would invite more attacks from the opposition.

“Not only does attacking our coalition partners open the doors for the opposition to call out fractured relationships within Pakatan Harapan, it also opens up our friends in PH to criticise our party in the open,” he said in a statement today.

The water, land and natural resources minister added that Anwar’s ascension to prime minister was in no jeopardy as PKR held the most seats in Parliament.

“Given that PKR MPs form the majority of the coalition block, I do not see any way for the agreement that Anwar will succeed Dr Mahathir to be breached by anyone in PH.

“Any concerns or allegations over the succession should have been dealt with in the Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council or internally within PKR,” Xavier said. – August 14, 2018.
