HOME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was finally sworn in as a lawmaker in the Dewan Rakyat today, after being on sick leave following surgery.

He missed the swearing-in ceremony for MPs on July 16 as he was recuperating in a Singapore hospital after having a pancreatic tumour removed.

The Pagoh MP returned to Malaysia over the weekend.

A ministry statement said Muhyiddin will undergo chemotherapy as he resumes work.

Muhyiddin took his oath of office before Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof at the start of the parliamentary proceedings.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby after being sworn in, Muhyiddin said he will resume attending cabinet meetings starting this Friday, but will ease back into work slowly, depending on his health.

“When I start work depends on my state of health. If I become a bit more healthy, I might start work, light work, like attending short meetings, based on the doctor’s advice.

“I will manage juggling treatment and work.”

He said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had urged him to be sworn in today, to avoid his seat falling vacant after six months’ absence.

Muhyiddin said he will start chemotherapy after Hari Raya Haji, which falls next week, adding that the treatment will go on for six months.

He said it will involve 12 sessions, to be carried out in Singapore and Malaysia. – August 14, 2018.
