FORMER Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah today lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over claims that goods and services tax (GST) refunds had gone missing under the previous government.
Irwan said the claim was “baseless” but wanted to lodge a report anyway so that the anti-graft body could investigate the claim made by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng recently, The Star Online reports.
Irwan said yesterday the refunds to businesses could not have gone missing as the money was placed in the federal government’s consolidated funds.
“I made the report because I want the truth,” he said outside the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya today.
Irwan’s move follows Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, who yesterday lodged a police report over the matter. Khairy is also to lodge a report with the MACC next week.
Lim said in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday RM18 billion in refunds was “missing” and blamed the previous Barisan Nasional government.
The money was meant for the government’s trust fund instead and proposed that the prime minister order an open inquiry on the matter. – August 10, 2018.
