FORMER prime minister Najib Razak today said it is unnecessary for Umno to defend him against attacks, including those relating to the criminal charges he is facing.
“I am also not guilty of the accusations against me. My only ‘mistake’ was doing my best for the people, the nation and my party,” he said on Facebook.
The former Umno president said he has no plans to hold the presidency again, adding that the party’s new leadership should be given trust and space to prove itself.
He said he is being targeted by his opponents as he is the immediate past prime minister and Barisan Nasional chairman.
He said the party’s role in bringing development and peace to Malaysia cannot be disputed.
The Pekan MP said Umno’s struggles are in good faith, adding that he will continue being a loyal party member, ready to assist whenever called upon.
“I am still an Umno division leader and MP. I also have the experience and knowledge on what happened in the previous BN administration.
“As such, I will continue to voice out issues that affect the people and nation.
Najib said he campaigned for BN’s Sungai Kandis candidate, Lokman Noor Adam, on the latter’s request.
He said Lokman and his team did well in the polls, despite losing to the Pakatan Harapan candidate by nearly 6,000 votes.
In recent days, several Umno leaders have criticised Najib’s role in the by-election campaign, given the multiple charges he faces.
Party secretary-general Annuar Musa told The Malaysian Insight that Umno views Najib as “baggage”, and needs to work on gaining lost support.
Titiwangsa Umno division chief Johari Abdul Ghani said Najib should not be allowed to campaign for BN in upcoming by-elections.
Earlier today, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Najib should not be offended by Umno leaders’ comments, and that party leaders should not air their grievances in the media.
Yesterday, Najib was slapped with three money laundering charges related to RM42 million from SRC International Bhd deposited into his account.
On July 4, he was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of misusing his position.
All seven charges are linked to SRC International, a former subsidiary of beleaguered state investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd. – August 9, 2018.
