PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has submitted his nomination papers, to contest the post of party president.

His candidature was announced by PKR election committee secretary Ismail Yusof at the party’s headquarters this morning.

Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is Anwar’s wife and outgoing PKR president, was her husband’s proposer, while Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin was the seconder.

Anwar’s nomination papers were submitted at 11.15am.

The PKR polls will be held from September 14 to October 7, and some 800,000 members will vote in stages via an electronic polling system.

It is yet unknown if Anwar will be challenged for the presidency.

If he is returned unopposed – as widely expected – it will be the first time Anwar holds an elected position in the party.

It will also pave the way for him to replace Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister, albeit after winning a parliamentary seat in a by-election. – August 5, 2018.
