PAS members joined Barisan Nasional candidate Lokman Noor Adam on the last leg of the campaign trail ending at midnight yesterday in Sungai Kandis.

In a series of kenduri in Sungai Kandis on the night before polling, The Malaysian Insight discovered that many grassroots PAS supporters had joined Lokman on his final walkabout.

“There has been no problem between PAS and Umno here although we are sworn political enemies. But tonight tells you everything about us,” said Hamdan, the organiser of Lokman’s event in the state seat.

“Many voters who are PAS members and supporters are with us tonight. They came willingly to show they are with BN and Umno. I think this is because the PAS leadership has given its consent (to support BN). It is good to see that PAS is with us.”

The BN candidate in tomorrow’s by-election, Lokman  also reminded PAS members to vote for BN tomorrow in his speeches and conversations at the night’s various events.

“I thank PAS for the support and we must all vote for BN tomorrow. Come out early and do not forget to bring along your IC,” said Lokman at a dinner event.

Tomorrow will see 51,230 people going to the voting booth to pick the Sungai Kandis representative. Their choices are PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, BN’s Lokman Adam and independent K Murthy.

In the past 12 days, Zawawi and Lokman have mainly campaigned around the Jalan Kebun and Sungai Kandis areas which house around 22,000 Malay voters. The Sungai Kandis electorate consists of 72% Malays, Indians (16%) and Chinese (12%).

In the May 9 general election, Mat Shuhaimie Shafiei (PKR) won at 19 of the 20 polling centres against Kamaruzzaman Johari (BN), Mohd Yusof Abdullah (PAS), and Hanafiah Husin (PRM).

The by-election is called following the sudden death of Shumaimie.

Meanwhile, more PAS members were spotted at a BN event in Johan Setia where singer Herman Tino was taking the stage.

These PAS members told The Malaysian Insight that they were supporting BN on the orders of their leaders.

They declined to be named and photographed.

“There’s no need to take our pictures. We are here because of orders from our leaders,” one of the men said.

Umno Wanita chief Noraini Ahmad was also spotted at the event in Johan Setia together with former Sungai Besar MP Budiman Zohdi.

Under the election law, all election campaign period must end by midnight. – August 4, 2018.
