THE Sungai Kandis by-election is the last time Pakatan Harapan candidates will use the PKR logo in an election campaign, said PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jayakumar.
“After this we will contest elections using the Pakatan Harapan logo that has just been approved by the Registrar of Societies,” said Xavier, at the final ceramah of the Sungai Kandis by-election campaign, tonight.
Polling is tomorrow.
“As such, this by-election is quite (bittersweet) for us as we will no longer use the PKR logo and flag after this,” said Xavier.
The water and natural resources minister did not say when the pact made the decision to replace the PKR logo with Pakatan’s in future polls.
Xavier was making a last pitch for voters to continue backing the coalition. PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was also present.
Tomorrow will see 51,230 people go to the voting booth to pick the Sungai Kandis representative. Their choices are PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, Barisan Nasional’s Lokman Adam and independent K Murthy.
PH tried and failed to get the coalition and its logo registered prior to its assuming power after May 9. Under the Barisan Nasional government, the coalition encountered many problems getting the Registrar of Societies’s approval for registration.
Pact member Bersatu also had difficulty with registration.
Finally, PH announced a month before the elections that it would adopt the PKR logo and flag to contest as a pact.
Weeks after BN has been ousted, the Registrar of Societies has registered PH and Bersatu,
Using the single PKR logo, PH made history when it won 113 out of 222 federal seats to achieve a simple majority in Parliament.
Two more by-elections will take place in Selangor after the Sungai Kandis polls.
Nomination for the Balakong by-election is on August 18. The Election Commission has yet to set the date for the Seri Setia by-election. – August 3, 2018.
