TELEVISION personality Mahadzir Lokman, who found fame as a TV3 newscaster, has died at hotel in Kota Kinabalu. He was 61.
The news was confirmed by his sister, Ida Lokman.
Kota Kinabalu police said they were informed of the matter at 11am today.
They said Mahadzir had checked into the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa on Tuesday, along with the family of his close friend, one Dr Maimunah.
Dr Maimunah told police that the last she saw of Mahadzir was at 10.40pm yesterday, when they left for their respective rooms after dinner.
Police said Mahadzir sent a “good morning” text to a WhatsApp group about 5am today.
They said at 9.30am, Dr Maimunah asked a hotel employee to open the door to Mahadzir’s room after getting no response from the latter. He was found unconscious.
A doctor then confirmed that he was dead.
Police said a heart attack may have been the cause of death.
They said while there were no criminal elements at the scene, investigations will be carried out.
Mahadzir was hospitalised in September last year after being found unconscious in his home, due to complications from high blood pressure and diabetes. He was in a coma for four days.
Mahadzir, popularly known as “Dale” to those close to him, frequently emceed at government functions.
He was knowledgeable in matters related to culture and protocol, and fluent in French, apart from Bahasa Malaysia and English, owing to his father’s services as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation diplomat in the 1970s and 1980s.
He also spoke Spanish, Japanese, Italian and Portuguese.
Mahadzir started his career as a TV3 newscaster in 1984, delivering the news in Bahasa Malaysia and English.
He hosted several of the broadcaster’s notable programmes, including Sekapur Sirih, Malaysia Hari Ini and Melodi. – August 3, 2018.
