PENANG Governor Abdul Rahman Abbas has told the state government to be vigilant for complacency and build on the state’s past success.

He said the state government could slip into complacency as Pakatan Harapan now holds federal power, and this could diminish Penang’s drive to improve.

“This victory should mean that there will be synergy between the state and federal governments,” he said in his opening address to mark the start of the 14th Penang Legislative Assembly session.

Rahman said the state has many strengths, such as its strategic location, various facilities and higher education institutions, which have driven its socio-economic growth, namely in the manufacturing and tourism sectors.

“We must be grateful that Penang has the complete package for investors. I am confident the state’s CAT (competency, accountability, transparency) leadership will draw more local and international investors.

“But, I hope we will not become complacent with our achievements. The achievements must be continued and improved on.”

He said Penang received early recognition from Putrajaya by being chosen to host the launch of this year’s national Merdeka month celebrations.

The launch by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be held at Padang Kota Lama tomorrow. It will be attended by senior cabinet members, and tens of thousands of people are expected to show up.

Rahman said the state, private sector and people must work as one to restore and improve the economy, especially for the benefit of the low-income group.

“While we enjoy rapid development, the less fortunate must be remembered. I hope the state will focus on the needs of the B40 (bottom 40% of households) and M40 (middle 40% of households) groups, such as cost of living and affordable housing.

“The private sector should assist the state in addressing this, and not focus only on making profit,” he said, adding that the economic agenda must transcend racial lines.

He said Penang should focus on increasing new economic opportunities, in line with the Industrial Revolution 4.0 that centres on creative technology and the Internet of Things.

Rahman told the 40 members of the state legislative assembly, the civil service and private sector, as well as the public, to contribute towards the state’s growth, whether in physical or non-physical “people-centric” projects.

“I hope all elected reps will make good use of this sitting to set the direction of the state for the next five years,” he said, adding that all members of the House should observe the Standing Orders and debate courteously. – August 3, 2018.
