PAS will be supporting Barisan Nasional in the Sungai Kandis by-election as the current government has failed to meet public expectations, said Takiyuddin Hassan.

The Islamist party’s secretary-general said the party will not lend support to Pakatan Harapan because the coalition has failed to live up to its manifesto promises.

“In the context of the Sungai Kandis by-elections, PAS has decided not to support the PH government, which sends out a message that they have failed to deliver on their manifesto promises,” he said in a statement today.

Takiyuddin added among the promises that PH has failed to deliver is protecting the Malay rulers, upholding Islam as an institution and protecting the rights of the Malays.

The Kota Bharu lawmaker also said the statements of several of PAS leaders during the campaign of the by-election reflect the party’s stand.

“The statements by several PAS leaders in the programmes at Sungai Kandis do not go against the stand of the party,” Takiyuddin said.

He then said PAS respected the words of party spiritual leader Hashim Jasin, who urged supporters to vote for the party that will not destroy Islam.

“PAS also adheres to the view of the Mursyidul Am (spiritual leader) on his advice that Sungai Kandis voters should not choose a candidate from a party that brings harm to Islam, the people and the country,” Takiyuddin added.

The seat fell vacant after its former assemblyman, PKR’s 50-year-old Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, died of cancer on July 2.

The by-election will see a three-cornered fight between BN’s Lokman Noor Adam, PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and independent K. Murthy.

In the 14th general election, Shuhaimi defeated Kamaruzzaman Johari (BN) and Mohd Yusof Abdullah (PAS) by 12,480 votes.

Although the outcome of the Sungai Kandis by-election will not affect the Selangor government, it could be an indication on whether Umno can still hold on to its Malay support base. – August 1, 2018.

  • Manifesto promises are not law, to be strictly followed, adjustments can be made to suit the situation - which is that the previous govt left behind much debt, so restricting Pakatan's ability to fulfill its manifesto..
