TODAY’s protest against the alleged threats to Malay-Muslim interests is a sign that support for Pakatan Harapan (PH) is on a decline, said former prime minister Najib Razak.

Najib, who is also former Umno president, said many Muslims and Malays were aware that the position of Islam, Malay rights and institutions concerning the Malay community were under threat.

“Because of this, they have risen up and shown their anger that people are not happy with this development.

“This is a sign that people’s support for the Pakatan Harapan government has declined, based on what they have done since May 9,” he told reporters in Jalan Kebun today.

Najib, who is campaigning BN’s candidate for the Sungai Kandis by-election Lokman Noor Adam, was asked to comment on the anti-government protest on matters related to Malay-Muslim interests at the Kelab Sultan Sulaiman in Kg Baru.

Today’s Kebangkitan Ummah rally was attended by 1,000 people representing 20 Malay nationalist and Muslim rights groups.

Lokman, who has been criticised for playing up racial and religious sentiments, also attended today’s rally.

Other Umno and PAS leaders were also present, including Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

On former veteran Umno leader Rais Yatim’s presence at the rally, Najib said the issue was important to the former minister, who was a recognised protector of the Malay language.

“His credibility will be questioned if he doesn’t attend or speak up on the matter openly,” Najib said.

This is the second time Najib had come to the ground to campaign for Lokman, who is going up against PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and independent K. Murthy in the August 4 polls.

This is the first by-election after the general election on May 9 following the passing of Shuhaimi Shafiei on July 2.

In May, Shuhaimie polled 23,998 votes to win with a majority of 12,480. BN’s Kamaruzzaman Johari garnered 11,518 votes while PAS’ Yusof Abdullah got 7,573. PRM’s Hanafiah Husin mustered only 76 votes out of 50,800. – July 28, 2018.

  • By-elections under these conditions can favour the opposition candidate, or result in reduced votes for the govt..
