PKR’s Rafizi Ramli is kicking off his campaign for the number two post in coming party elections with a nationwide tour beginning this Sunday, where he is expected to announce other members of his team.
Confirming media reports that he was making a bid for the deputy presidency, the former Pandan MP said he had not much to offer since he did not hold a government position, but he felt burdened to continue the party’s reforms now that PKR had with its Pakatan Harapan allies won federal power in the May 9 elections.
“It is a heavy burden (to contest) because I am not in the government, nor do I have money. Losing or winning is not important for me, but I want to maintain the party’s reformist ideals that gave birth to PKR,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
Rafizi holds no other post in the party other than being an incumbent vice-president. He did not contest the 14th general election because of a court conviction over leaking confidential information on the National Feedlot Corporation.
He described himself as a reformist who wanted to keep alive PKR’s idealism that began 20 years ago when its precursor, KeAdilan, was formed in the wake of the Reformasi movement after the sacking and jailing of then-deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Rafizi said he wanted to meet PKR activists on his nationwide tour to listen to suggestions on reforming the party. The elections are from mid-September to early October.
The other members of Rafizi’s team appear to be Nurul Izzah Anwar, Johari Abdul, William Leong, S Kesavan, Fuziah Salleh, Rodziah Ismail, Akmal Nasir, and Raymond Ahuar.
They are pictured standing with him in a poster with the hashtag #Reformasi20Tahun that Rafizi uploaded as the cover photo of his Facebook page today.
Above the group in the photo are the pictures of de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim and party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Anwar is contesting the president’s post and as yet has no challenger. Rafizi has backed Anwar for the post.
Rafizi’s fight for the number two spot will pit him against incumbent deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, unless the latter goes for another post.
Azmin, the economic affairs minister, has been coy over which post he will contest, saying he is too busy focusing on parliamentary and ministry issues.
The likely battle between Rafizi and Azmin is expected to be a heated affair in a party said to be rife with factionalism that had delayed the naming of its candidates for the recent general election.
Azmin’s supporter, PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin, recently made light of the “camps” within the party, saying that open contests for posts were bound to create factions.
Rafizi said he hoped to introduce the other leaders on his team this Sunday at the launch of his campaign at Hotel De Palma in Ampang in the afternoon. – July 27, 2018.
