NAJIB Razak today denied allegations that he had planned to declare a state of emergency and cling onto power after Barisan Nasional lost the May 9 general election.

The former prime minister said the allegations were untrue and subsequent events showed that the transfer of power had taken place peacefully.

“As we all know on May 9, a transfer of power happened peacefully. Prior to that an allegation had surfaced that myself, as the prime minister, planned to create chaos and call for a state of emergency. The claim was that I was afraid to lose power.

“The allegation was completely baseless altogether,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today while debating the royal address.

The Pekan MP added there were no calls made for a National Security Council (NSC) meeting on the night.

“What was accused was baseless and I can tell the honourable Dewan today that if you refer to Malaysian Armed Forces at that time, the inspector-general of police and NSC that there were no calls made for a meeting on May 9,” he said.

He also said he believes in the democratic principles and obeys the rule of law

During the debate, Najib also touched on the goods and services tax (GST), which he said affected the wealthy more as compared to the poor.

He said the implementation was based on one’s spending which would lead to more being paid by the individual for the items bought.

“Since the wealthy group of people spend more, hence they pay a huge chunk of the GST,” he said adding that GST collects more income than the sales and service tax (SST) and the excess income is then channelled to help the B40 group.

Under the new Pakatan Harapan government, the SST will be rolled out on September 1 and according to the Customs Department, goods sold under the tax will be taxed at 0%, 5%, or 10% while services will be taxed across the board at 6%.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had previously said the government expects to collect RM4 billion from SST this year after its implementation. – July 26, 2018.

  • NEITHER NAJIB, I, NOR NUMEROUS OTHER MALAYSIANS REALLY THOUGHT ON MAY 9 THAT PAKATAN LED BY TUN DR. MAHATHIR WOULD WIN GE14. What a greatest of blessings it was for Malaysia that we had Tun in the background agitating the Agong, etc, to ensure that Najib would not stage a power grab & prevent a Pakatan victory! MALAYSIA WILL NEVER EVER BE THE SAME SHIT AGAIN, a land of milk & honey maybe?..

  • If Najib had the chance he would have somehow clung to power. But the final results were so strongly against BN that he was blindsided and had no time or the excuse required to declare a 'coup' of sorts.
