KHAIRY Jamaluddin turned down offers of three positions in Umno and Barisan Nasional, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed today.
The Umno president said Khairy was asked to contest for the party deputy presidency but he turned it down. The next offer of the BN secretary-general’s post was also rejected as was the information chief’s post.
“First, before the party elections, I gave him the opportunity to run for deputy president because Hisham had decided to withdraw from the race.
“After he lost (the contest for the party presidency), I offered him the BN secretary-general’s post but he turned that down as well.
“Before the new Umno Supreme Council line up was announced, I made him the third offer of the information chief’s post but he turned it down,”Zahid told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
The former deputy prime minister said Khairy did not give a reason for his rejection of all three posts, which he said the former Youth leader should have accepted if he wished to help rebuild Umno.
“He probably has his own plan to assist in reviving the party as constructive opposition,” Zahid added.
Khairy contested against Zahid and Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Hamzah for the Umno presidency but came in a close second.
The Rembau MP also did not take part in his party’s walkout of the first day of the Parliament sitting to protest the appointment of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker. – July 25, 2018.
